  • “Air gap” means a physical separation between a point of free-flowing discharge from a pipe that supplies liquid to an open or nonpressurized vessel and the overflow rim of that vessel which is:

         1. At least twice the effective diameter of that pipe or, if the pipe is affected by side walls, at least three times the effective diameter of that pipe; and

         2. In no case less than 1 inch.
