NAC484D.110. Condition of brake system: Air-operated brake standards.

  •      1. All air-operated brake systems must be free of audible leaks at the diaphragms, piston cups, stoplight switch or at any valve in the system.

         2. Every bus, truck or truck-tractor with air-operated brakes must have a system capable of:

         (a) Building up air pressure from 50 to 90 pounds per square inch in 5 minutes or less with engine running at fast idle, unless other values are recommended by the vehicle manufacturer;

         (b) Holding an air brake pressure drop to 2 pounds or less per square inch in 60 seconds for a single motor vehicle, or 3 pounds or less per square inch in 60 seconds for a combination of a towing vehicle and single towed vehicle, or 5 pounds or less per square inch in 60 seconds for a combination of a towing vehicle and two or more towed vehicles, with engine stopped and service brakes released; and

         (c) Holding an air brake pressure drop to 3 pounds or less per square inch in 60 seconds for a single motor vehicle, or 4 pounds or less per square inch in 60 seconds for a combination of a towing vehicle and single towed vehicle, or 6 pounds or less per square inch in 60 seconds for a combination of a towing vehicle and two or more towed vehicles, with engine stopped and service brakes fully applied.

         3. Air-operated brake system hoses, tubes or connections may not be abraded, broken, cracked, crimped, leaking, restricted or have other damage that could cause brake system failure.

         4. Connecting lines must be properly attached and supported to prevent damage or abrasion by contact with frame, axle, other lines or any other part of the vehicle.
